![]() Sometimes they are bad, sometimes they are good. Commanders change out every two years, so you always have new leadership coming and going. The people with something positive to say probably didn't seek out that web page in order to post positive comments.Īs for leadership, that is irrelevant as you would have different leadership. Most of the people there have chosen to complain and make everything negative. But, jobs are what you make of them, military or civilian. And pretty much everyone will bitch about something at some point. There are people that will bitch about every job. Take anonymous Internet comments with a grain of salt. So if you want to encompass the second core value of the AF, "Service Before Self", you will be doing the AF a great service by becoming a 1A8. If you hate it, then you'll either get jaded and leave the AF, or you'll get an opportunity to cross train and to make the best of your career somewhere else.īut keep in mind, the AF is always in need of 1A8s. ![]() If you get into it and love it, then you'll never work a day in your life. Ultimately 1A8s are met with burnout or success. Of course it is always dependent on the excellence of the individual no matter what, but the credentials a 1A8 brings with them carries a lot of weight. DLI, flight experience, and deployment experience are huge pluses on an OTS application. I have never known a 1A8 to apply for OTS and not get in. 1A8s are very highly regarded among AF leadership. One thing to keep in mind is officer aspirations. Have a bad attitude, you're gonna have a bad time (said in South Park ski instructor's voice). The most difficult aspect is the rare use of your language skills, lack of opportunities to maintain your language skills, and the constant Sword of Damocles hanging over your head demanding that you continue to pass your language tests or else. As an enlisted person, there's nowhere else I'd rather be, despite all the pain. It can be a very frustrating career field at times and also very rewarding. Most of what has already been posted on this comments page is true and accurate. If you're cool with that, you can expect a very fulfilling career.īeing a 1A8 is one of the most dynamic jobs in the AF. Just keep in mind, as an Airborne Crypto-Linguist, it's your job to identify your target language to keep you and yours safe. You will deploy fairly regularly, and depending on your language, you have the oppotunity to PCS to some pretty cool places overseas. Don't slack off, and stay on top of your shit, and you'll do just fine. It's a lot of work, but it IS NOT difficult to keep up with it if you have a modicum of self control and keep yourself organized. As XELIF said, you're not a translator, interrogator, or interpreter - join the Army for that. You will continually train and maintain your language, even when not flying. Once you're qualified on the jet, you'll be assigned your permanent duty station. Finally, you'll be off to your flight training. SERE will be some of the coolest shit you'll ever do. Pass the DLPT and you'll be off to Basic Intel school with a focus on your language (or not if you're in a low-flow), followed by SERE (survival school). However, you'll be in Monterey, CA - that's freaking awesome. You need to study a lot, regardless how good you may think you are at languages. Getting through the training is probably the hardest part. 63 weeks of intensive language training for a Category IV language is a long time - but the amount of material covered could probably use double that.
